NCEA Level 1 and 2 History
At each NCEA level a year plan exists that progresses students towards independent historic inquiry.
Term 1 is a good time to experiment with History and to join a class-based topic. Identification of historic context and communication of differing perspectives are assessment outcomes of this course. Creative ways of accessing and using historical resources to explain differences of opinion, experiences and actions are part of the learning focus for this term. Key skills in historical understanding, appropriate research and effective presentation will be developed.
Term 2 builds on the learning from term 1 and is devoted to supporting students towards assessment of an independent historic inquiry. This inquiry focuses on successful historical research, students’ goal setting, self-management and reflection on learning. Students are free to choose any topic through negotiation with Richard but must be able to communicate the significance of the topic for NZ.
Term 3 offers the opportunity to develop effective communication of key ideas identified in term 2 and will involve creating a Teaching and Learning Resource.
Students are supported towards one additional NCEA assessment through external exam preparation in term 4.
It is important to view History as a year long program. Term 1 is essential for students' understanding of the expectations around assessments for the rest of the year. Additionally, Term 2 is a pre-requisite for study in Term 3.
