Participating and contributing

This competency is about being actively involved in communities. Communities include family, whānau, and school and those based, for example, on a common interest or culture. They may be drawn together for purposes such as learning, work, celebration, or recreation. They may be local, national, or global. This competency includes a capacity to contribute appropriately as a group member, to make connections with others, and to create opportunities for others in the group.

Students who participate and contribute in communities have a sense of belonging and the confidence to participate within new contexts. They understand the importance of balancing rights, roles, and responsibilities and of contributing to the quality and sustainability of social, cultural, physical, and economic environments.

HB Piwakawaka Stage 4 Maths Term 4 2020

In term 4 we will work in small groups for three LA guided numeracy sessions each week. We will supplement the Stage 4 Numeracy Project material with Numicon activities to support our learning, continuing to work through Numicon book 1.

Alongside our small group lessons, we will use Seesaw online activities, games, worksheets and book work for additional activities that support and enhance our learning.

We are learning to use imaging, counting on and counting back as well as using skip counting to solve repeated addition problems.

Tools for Learning Term 4 2020 HB Piwakawaka

With new learners joining HB Piwakawaka regularly, we will mainly focus our Tools for Learning sessions on learning how to use Seesaw. Seesaw is one of the main digital tools we use to support our learning. We can use Seesaw to share our learning with whanau as well as complete assigned learning activities and record all aspects of the learning we do at school.

Music and Movement - Piwakawaka Term 3 and 4 2020

On Thursday afternoons we will be exploring different types of music, including playing musical instruments - beat, rhythm, tempo etc. Having children's choices of music, including song videos. Using my music and waiata book, puppets, magnet songs. Children are able to follow song actions, be creative/expressive through dance and sing along too.

Pukeko Measurement Problem Solving T4 2020

Each Friday this term we will be working as a whole HB on problem solving in maths. This term we will focus on Measurement for our strand and do this each Friday as a whole Pukeko group.
We will be going over length, area, volume, temperature and time.
Activities will largely be based around our integrated Living World focus and will include lots of hands on activities including designing, making and measuring.
We will also endeavour to use this time to do some real world problem solving and get out in the city to make maths real.

Phonics - Beginning Stage 5, T4 2020

Delivery of the phonics programme at Stage 5 is split. There is a Stage 5 beginning, and a Stage 5 end group.

There are 4 x weekly phonics lessons based on Yolanda Sorryl's Phonics Programme.

"To be able to hear, read and write the consonant digraphs and trigraphs", to be able to blend and segment words with more than three phonemes."

Purple Reading Group T4 2020

Students reading at Purple are still developing fluency and expression, and still rely on decoding strategies frequently. Comprehension is less important at this level, but should be beginning to develop and questions about the texts help to develop this.
Student will be able to give opinions and make predictions, draw inferences, notice more print conventions and vary their voice accordingly, understand more challenging vocab, be able to summarise the text, describe the strategies they have used to decode an unknown word.

Stage 4 Fractions T4 2020

We will be focusing on Fractions, in small groups 3x per week with students from Pukeko. Add/Sub and Mult/Div were covered in Terms 1 - 3.
Students from my HB will also work on Stage 0-4 Number Knowledge and complete Basic Facts activities based on these alongside their fractions learning, as well as completing fractions follow-up activities 2x per week.

HB Piwakawaka Nature Play Days

On Wednesdays in term 4 we will be heading to the Richmond Community Gardens to explore nature. This links nicely with our growing things inquiry.

While we are there we will:

Explore literacy in Nature
Focus on Measurement for Maths
Play in Nature
Explore the gardens and perhaps help weed the garden beds
Do some art
