The Stars - the Cosmos, have fascinated human beings for millennia. For some the stars hold foreboding messages and fear, for others they can light the way in journeys across vast oceans, set calendars, and reaching into outer-space. We will explore the different meanings and attractions that the stars hold for different people and societies. The stars hold a special importance for Māori in many different ways. Matariki, the Māori New Year, signifies new beginnings, planting for the future and remembering the past. In the past, Polynesian navigators used the stars to find their across the almost unbounded Pacific, today people are still reaching for the stars as scientists probe the depths of space and try to bring meaning to our understanding of the universe. In the class we will look at what the stars mean for ourselves and others and why they are important.
