2022 Term 3 Structured Literacy Program: Stage 1-4 (Melva)

Stage 1-4

Students through small targetted workshops covering a range of activities will participate in building strong phonological awareness skills that can be utilised in decoding and encoding words.
This will be augmented with daily use of STEPWISE to support development.

This will encompass specifically the skills listed below:
Stages 1-4 (After 2 Terms)
Phonological
Awareness
Identify syllables in words.
Identify phonemes in words.
Blend and segment (break sounds up) in single-syllable CVC words e.g. cat / mat.
Identify and produce rhyme.

Reading
Learn the ‘simple alphabetic code’ (26 sounds of the alphabet - one letter, one sound) and letter names:
Consonants: m s f p t c b h n d g l v y r z j k w (plus qu – two letters, two sounds, x – one letter, two sounds)
Short vowels: a i o e u.
Say the sound for both upper- and lower-case letters
Decode CVC words (read consonant - vowel - consonant words) using knowledge of the simple code.
Read Stages 1-4 Heart words.
Use decoding skills, knowledge of heart words and punctuation to read decodable texts and demonstrate literal comprehension.
Writing - Spelling
Encode CVC words to spell with accuracy using knowledge of Stages 1-4 phoneme-grapheme correspondences.

Writing -
Handwriting
Form upper-case and lower-case letters.
Learn the starting point and direction for each letter.
Learn a tripod pencil grip.
Develop a writing posture/position – feet flat on the floor, sitting in a chair at a table, paper on table straight in front etc.

Punctuation
Full stops (reading & writing)
Capital letters (reading & writing)
Commas, exclamation marks, question marks (reading)
