Stage 7 Unit 1-4

Students through small targetted workshops covering a range of activities will participate in building strong phonological awareness skills that can be utilised in decoding and encoding words.

This will be augmented with daily use of STEPWISE to support development.

This will encompass specifically the skills listed below:
Phonological
Awareness
Segment multisyllabic words (break up words with more than one syllable).
Manipulate phonemes (addition, deletion, and substitution of sounds) to make new words e.g. pip / pop / top.
Identify syllables in words.
Identify all 44 English phonemes (consonants, short & long vowels - long vowels say their name).
Blend and segment words with the schwa phoneme - makes an ‘u’ sound. (Examples of a schwa: a: balloon)

Reading
Decode words with alternative spellings & alternative pronunciations (the complex code):
Alternative spellings for long vowels: /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /ou/, /oi/, /oo/, /oo/ and /yoo/
Alternative spellings for r-controlled vowels: /ar/, /or/, /er/, /air/
Alternative spellings for consonants /r/, /m/, /n/, /s/, /j/, /k/ -
Alternative pronunciation of g and c (‘soft g’ and ‘soft c’) after e, y or i.
Read Stage 7 Heart words.
Recognise and comprehend synonyms and antonyms
Read decodable texts fluently and demonstrate literal comprehension.

Writing - Spelling
Segment to spell some polysyllabic words (including encoding the schwa sound).
Segment words that include split vowel digraphs.
Utilise knowledge of alternative graphemes and English orthography to recall the correct spelling of a sound in a word.
Recognise homophones.
Identify some suffixes and apply some of their associated spelling rules when the base word is changed.

Morphology
The suffixes -s, -ing (verbs) and -er (nouns and comparative adjectives) include rules for doubling consonant letters and dropping the e.
Writing -
Handwriting
Write upper- and lower-case letters legibly.
Use an appropriate pencil grip and body position to write.
Punctuation
Contractions (reading & writing).
