HB Pōhutukawa Level 2 Reading Term 2 2021

We will focus on one or two texts a week. The LA will read to the children and model decoding and comprehension strategies. We will move on to shared reading, where the text is big enough for the children to read along with the teacher. Finally, students will end the week with independent reading, where they apply the strategies they have learned over the week.

Guided reading sessions will happen throughout the week. Students will read quietly/silently at their own pace, and we will discreetly signal for each student to raise their volume so we can monitor how they are going. Each reading group will be seen 3 times a week (and possibly Friday morning).

At reading levels Purple, Gold and level 2 children will work on these explicit decoding strategies:
Sounding out
Read ahead, then returning
Picture prompt
using punctuation for meaning

Children will look at these types of texts across the term:

To Do List: 
Uses sounding out strategies to decode unknown words
Discusses ideas about the text to show comprehension
Makes predictions about text based on knowledge of the text read so far
