Where did the universe come from? Could it have started from Nothing? Answering this question involves both science and philosophy. But what exactly is science? How does it work? How do we know whether science provides reliable knowledge about the world? Are there some questions that sit beyond the realm of science?

Scientists base their discipline on a range of assumptions. It cannot progress without acceptance of these assumptions. However, because science is based on these assumptions, it cannot question those assumptions from within its own methodology. That is the job of philosophy.

During this block we will explore the nature of science with reference to the development of the Big Bang theory.
