2020 Term 4 Maths: stage 6 to stage 7 mult/div
Moving from stage 6 to stage 7 in Numeracy Project
Students will take part in workshops three times a week, developing understanding and strategies for solving multiplication and division problems. Students will reinforce and consolidate learning with 3 independently directed sessions online at Mathsbuddy, selected to build on workshop learning and appropriate number knowledge/strategy practise.
Strategies we will be looking to develop include
Using standard place value to solve multiplication problems, (distributive property)
Using tidy numbers to solve multiplication problems (distributive property)
Using proportional adjustment like doubling and halving, thirding and trebling, to solve multiplication problems
Using standard place value to solve division problems, including written forms,
Using standard place value with tidy numbers to solve division problems
Simplifying division problems by changing both numbers (halving, thirding etc.)
Anticipating what happens to a number when it is multiplied or divided by ten, one hundred, one thousand, and so on.
Solving problems using a combination of the four operations, including using the order of operations
Number Knowledge developing:
Know basic multiplication and division facts.
Say the forwards and backwards decimal word sequences by thousandths, hundredths, tenths, ones, tens, etc, starting at any whole number.
Say the number onethousandth, onehundredth, one-tenth, one, and ten, etc, before and after any given whole number.
Order decimals to three places.
Subtraction can produce negative numbers.
The “ten for one” and “one for ten” canons apply when adding and subtracting with decimal fractions
