This term we will continue to follow an integrated approach to literacy.

Learners in this group have developed a level of independence in their writing - they can write their alphabet and know most of their letter sounds, they are developing their phonics skills and can sound out some letters they can hear in words, they can write an increasing amount of Fast Words and can craft short sentences, they are developing their understanding and use of punctuation, they can read texts in the Magenta, Red and Yellow levels and are working on Fast Words cards 1, 2 or 3.

The beginning of the term will be delivered online due to the Covid-19 lockdown, using our HB Piwakawaka website - in conjunction with activities via Seesaw (and other online tools - stories shared via Youtube for example).

Once back on-site, we will be using big books and experiential activities as stimulus for our reading and, particularly, our writing. We will have shared stories relating to the stimuli. We will use the texts to support our knowledge and understanding of punctuation, grammar and other surface features of writing. We will continue to do fast words, phonics and hand writing as a part of our programme, alongside 4 targeted reading sessions per week as we learn the skills necessary for moving towards independent writing.

Please see the Fast Words lists below.
