For three Mondays this term HB Piwakwaka will explore sciences and technology.

1. Coding using "Let's go code."
“Students understand that digital applications and systems are created for humans by humans.”
NZ Curriculum

In this session we will look at what coding is and begin to explore coding through kinesthetic movement.

We will use the tool “Let’s Go Code!” activity set.

To begin with I will model how to code a small set of movements. The children will follow my commands according to the code. The children will then break up into small groups and one coder will code and tell the “robots” what to do.

We will then introduce the coding mazes beginning with basic codes. We will build up to adding in the “action coding cards.”

If there is time we will introduce the bees bots and how to code them.

2. Coding the Bee Bots.
In this session we will focus on coding the bee bots.

Firstly we will review how to code the bots. Then we will break the group into three.

Children will have a grid pre-drawn for them to get their bees to move around. Each grid will have a start point and three - four “locations.” After the children have had a go at coding to a destination the children can begin to create mazes using blocks for the bees to move through.

Remember to take some Seesaw videos of each group.

3. Flowers

Living World “Recognise that all living things have certain requirements so they can stay alive.”

Today we will be focusing on Riley’s passion for flowers. We will look at flowers, draw flowers, label flowers and press flowers to use later.

Look at a flower. Gently pull it apart. What are the different parts of a flower? What are they for?
Draw a picture of the flower pulled apart. Point to the parts of the flower.
Riley will teach us how to press flowers which we can use in a few weeks.
