Te Waipapa o Ao Tawhiti Kapa Haka
Toku toa, he toa rangatira
(My bravery is inherited from the chief before me)
Kapa Haka will now stay in KAKARIKI/GREEN as we have now combined with Te Puna Wai o Waipapa (Hagley Community College) making our competition name Te Waipapa o Ao Tawhiti. They will be joining us on Wednesday mornings and we will be practicing at their school on a Friday afternoon.
It is competition year for secondary schools with the Waitaha (Canterbury) Regionals being held at Aurora Centre on Saturday 3rd August. Year 9 to Year 13 are the ages for this competition though younger students are MOST welcome to learn with us though may not be in the competition formations - we need backstage support.
We have already had one Kapa Haka Wananga (intensive) held over a weekend at Ao Tawhiti and there are at least two more Noho Marae (sleepovers) planned to be hosted at Te Whānau (Hagley's Whare).
Within these waiata, moteatea, poi, waiata-a-ringa, haka, whakaeke, whakawatea the students will also learn tikanga and of course Te Reo Māori. Unit standards can apply if the students are willing to do extra study - meaning they will have to learn other waiata not in the competition bracket.
