We will look at a style of poetry that emerged in the late 20th century and has now become a dominant medium for social commentary. It started in the 1980s with poets like Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, DJ Kool Herc, MC Hammer, and The Fresh Prince. It has become so broad it now encompasses strange subcategories of hip-hop like mumble rap and gqom. We will follow the progression of hip-hop, rap and the messages that sit in behind the beats and rhymes. Our studies will follow the timeline from the Pioneer era, through the Golden Era, and into the Platinum era. We will have frank and serious discussions about the validity of the subject matter, motivations behind its choice, and the language use.

Although we will attempt to directly avoid it...
