Calculus is the mathematical study of change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the study of operations and their application to solving equations.

Calculus is used in every branch of the physical sciences, actuarial science, computer science, statistics, engineering, economics, business, medicine, demography, and in other fields wherever a problem can be mathematically modeled and an optimal solution is desired.

This is normally a full year course for students who have completed level two mathematics and wish to pursue the sciences further or just love a challenge.
It will prepare students for first year university courses in mathematics, computer science, physics and engineering as well as providing a foundation for a future studies in subjects such as bio-mathematics and economics.

Recommended Prior Learning

If you did not get Merit or above in both level one Algebra 91027 and level 2 Algebra 91261 you will find the algebra content really hard. It is also recommended to have a good understanding of cartesian graphs like those covered in level two Graphs 91257.
It is OK for students without this knowledge to attempt this course IF they are prepared to work hard and catch up on this knowledge.

I suggest all students revise basic algebra as it is the language we will be using in this course to learn more complex ideas. Maybe create a khan academy login and practise - you can join the rest of the class on there with this code qv6v5xa

NCEA year plan
In this Calculus course we normally cover 21 credits, though there are a few other internal options available that students may work on independently.

This is a University Entrance approved subject.

The year plan is as follows:

  • Trigonometry - internal assessment 91575, 4 credits (~6 weeks)
  • Differentiation - external assessment 91578, 6 credits (~7 weeks)
  • Integration - external assessment 91579, 6 credits (~7 weeks)
  • Complex Numbers - external assessment 91577, 5 credits (~7 weeks)
  • Revison.
