This is an Education for Sustainability class which will explore values of a geographic area and the long term effects of human activities. We have a number of different ‘profit-from-land” practices in New Zealand. These range from guiding and adventure sports to intensive farming or mineral extraction. These activities also sit on a scale of the long term sustainability of the environment they depend on. We will explore the various land use models employed by New Zealand in the government and private sectors and their impact on our delicate ecosystem. We will also look at the long term viability of these practices. This will lead into the content for next term, which will focus on the economic component of the concept of sustainability.
