The first part of Term 3 will focus on organic chemistry - no, not the study of organic foods, but the study of carbon-containing molecules. We will expand upon knowledge of organic chemistry from Level 2 to include functional groups such as aldehydes, ketones, esters, amides, and acyl chlorides. We will try for ourselves the many chemical reactions that can be done with these organic compounds to make useful things, such as pharmaceutical drugs and polymers! This term will be “alkynes” of fun, so hopefully no one will be “diene” of boredom.

In the latter part of Term 3, we will work towards an internal assessment of our knowledge of redox (reduction-oxidation) chemistry. We will expand upon our knowledge of redox from Level 2 so that we can make electrolytic cells and determine whether a cell made with specific metals and electrolytes will work. We'll also look at cool, cutting-edge emerging battery technologies that will change our world.
